Steps
I consistently find myself in the position wanting new and amazing things out of life. I dream up scenarios that are big and amazing; new houses, big businesses, successful children, sexy vacations etc.
We live in a society fixated on these big moments. These moments communicated as if there is nothing behind the scenes. No hustle, no sweat. No heartbreak. Just moments; Big, amazing, beautiful moments. Look at the result. Look at the end. WOW!
I grow continuously anxious. The Instagram feed or the TikTok. What is wrong with me that I don’t have that? Why don’t I experience all of those things?! Why is it not that simple for me? Did I do something wrong?
What I realize over time is that this is only a snapshot. It’s like a polaroid. Take the picture and out comes the photo. The more I am able to understand that the snapshot is only a small, narrow, shallow version of the whole story, the less anxious I feel. What of the steps that led to this? How much planning went into this? How long have they been working to attain this result? What heartbreak did they endure to find that ending? You don’t know those things, and the irony is the beauty of the ending is found in the story, in the steps. The steps that led to that destination. That’s what painted the full picture.
Steps is an acknowledgment of the many hundreds and thousands of stories that lead to the snapshot. The steps that it takes to get there. It’s also an encouragement to stop and take a look at the step in front of you today. It’s important. It’s vitally important. Don’t miss it.
